Story

Lawrence Elk One day Ralph, our winemaker’s dad, had some laundry hanging out on the line. He looked out the window to see a buck deer with his antlers entangled in Ralph’s unmentionables. As the story got retold, it changed a bit (as all the best stories do), and it inspired Lawrence Elk.

The name is also a nod to the famous North Dakota-born bandleader Lawrence Welk, the father of “Champagne music” who made quite a name for himself in Eastern South Dakota, where he played dances with the Hotsy Totsy Boys and the Honolulu Fruit Gum Orchestra.

By far our favorite wine from Prairie Berry. It has such a pleasant taste and is great before a meal, with a meal or after one. We try to make sure we always have a couple bottles of this on hand to share when we have company stop by. Great job on this one folks!!!

I was fortunate enough to go on a culinary tour through Spain and France last fall – where I discovered the nectar of the Gods – Sangria!! As with any fine concoction every region, and every family has its own recipe – and some are better than others. Upon returning to Canada the group I went with has met many times and we have all tried to recreate our favourite Sangria to limited success.

At out last meeting I decided to use the Bottle of Lawrence Elk I picked up in SD when I was visiting my Aunt – and you know what ? – All agreed that the Lawrence Elk was the perfect backdrop on which to create the best Sangria we had drank since leaving Spain!! Its fruity notes were perfect to balance the citrus and bold enough to stand out against the brandy and triple sec. On its own or in Sangria Lawrence Elk is a marvellous choice!!

I’m usually not a sweet wine drinker, but a neighbor of ours gave us this wine and it has definitely become one of our faves! My husband and I have different palates but we can agree on sharing this wine. The more chilled, the better!

My wife and I visited yesterday and had to get this wonderful wine as it met both of us in an incredible place. You know the ONE where we both agree on a wine. I know that to many of you it is still mythical but as for us we have been there and got the wine (t-shirt didn’t taste as good).

My husband and I went on vacation in South Dakota and discovered Prairie Berry Winery while we were there. We did their tasting of several different wines, and we both agreed that this wine was our favorite by far. We took a few bottles home and still agreed that we both LOVED it. Now we order it, and have it shipped to us, and now our friends and family are getting hooked on it as well. Definitely a wonderfully flavored wine that we enjoy in the evenings after a long day as a special treat. I love it chilled really cold.

Fell in love with this wine. I used to love sweet wine but also love tart things. This wine gives me all the pleasure of both. We live in ND and travel to either Aberdeen or Mobridge to purchase. Just came back from Kansas and purchases 16 bottles to get me through my vacation and summer weekends. I just noticed I can now purchase on line and they will ship to ND. I might try that next time.

I am certainly not a wine drinker, when we visited the winery for my wife, they suggested this as a beer drinkers wine. I was awesome! Thanks for the tip and the taste I am sold. Numerous wines were tasted and the People were very friendly and helpful. Great staff and great wines.

On our trip to Sturgis, a friend asked if we would pick up her order of “3 Red Necks” wine she had purchased over the Internet. She had stopped by Prarie Berry winery on a horseback riding trip and really enjoyed the wine. While stopping in to pick up her order, we did a “wine tasting” and absolutely fell for Lawrence Elk!! It is a semi-sweet wine which is best served chilled. We picked up several bottles while we were there and have since ordered two additional cases!!! Shipping was quick to Colorado. An added bonus is the free shipping on a case of wine which saves you $36. This wine is definitely worth trying.

Love this wine. Bought a bottle at Hart Ranch this fall when we were there. Loved it so much, I went back to the Mart for a couple more before we left. Have since ordered online. Love, love, love this wine.

Never in my life have I had such a delicious wine. Every single wine I tasted was so amazing! However, the Lawrence Elk was the most spectacular with it’s pine and currant notes. I have to say this place has the wine making business down to a fine science. The greatest experience of wine tasting I have had to date. Nothing yet can compare. What I like so much about their wine and what sets them apart from every other winery I have visited and I have visited a lot, is the distinction between the flavors. With the Wild Plum upon first sip was the bitter and crisp bite of the skin and then the sweet of the meat of the plum. It was literally like taking a bite out of a fresh plum off the tree. The Lawrence Elk…oh my! It was that amazing bitter and almost dry pine, then it was sweet of the currant that wet your tongue. I just cannot even describe it any differently than this. What a great experience! I cannot wait to come back for more.

I received Lawrence Elk in my selection of wines from the Wine Club. Let me tell you it was wonderful! I took it to a party and it was a hit-unfortunately for me-I didn’t get to drink as much of it as I would have liked! I will order more, and I hope it is once again in my Wine Club shipment (hint, hint). : )

We recently took a trip to Rapid City with our close friends. They introduced us to the Prairie Berry Winery. I left with 5 selections that day. After returning home, my husband and I decided to open the Lawrence Elk first. I joined the Wine Club the next day and ordered more. All of the selections we brought home from our trip were fantastic, but the Lawrence Elk is BY FAR my favorite.
