Story

Red Ass RhubarbToo many cooks can spoil the stew, and too many helpers in the winery can change the course of history. In the early days Ralph, our winemaker’s dad, was helping out in the winery. He accidentally added elderberry to the tank for Razzy Rhubarb wine, which, at that point, was no longer Razzy Rhubarb wine.

The story goes that his face turned red and he felt like an ass for messing up the wine, so it became Red Ass Rhubarb. Add a donkey to the label and you’ve got the most famous, most award-winning wine made in South Dakota (we decided to leave out the elderberry in subsequent fermentations).

Awards

Red Ass Rhubarb is Prairie Berry Winery's most popular and most award winning wine. Order online or pick up at Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City, South Dakota or Prairie Berry East Bank in Sioux Falls, South DakotaThis is one of the best fruit wines I’ve ever had. It’s tangy, like having rhubarb pie, and its moderate sweetness means it could work well with dinner or dessert. Unless Oakland A’s second baseman Mark Ellis starts hitting again, this wine could be my 2nd favorite thing about South Dakota, just behind watching untrained college kids wrestle alligators at Reptile Gardens.

I am not a real wine connoisseur, and usually stick to Reisling as a first choice, but I really enjoyed the Red Ass Rhubarb.

I am a sweet wine fan and do not like reds. An awesome friend brought this back as a gift and it just made her more awesome! I joined the 5Gen club because of it. It is rhubarb tart with a sweet, raspberry finish. Scary good!

A group of my friends arrived in your area and snagged a bottle of this! Red ass rhubarb. Not knowing what to expect at first sip. This stuff is amazing. As it teased my taste buds! This is ultimately the best summer time wine I have experienced.

I don’t drink alcohol. My cardiologist told me a glass of wine now and then would be good for me. I had only found one that I really liked. We were in SD for the buffalo round up and met another couple at the hotel where we were staying. We spoke of things to do while there. The gentleman told me that he was not a wine drinker but that we needed to go to the Prairie Berry Winery and try the Red Ass Rhubarb. He said it was really good. I purchased 6 bottles. Some for me and some for gifts. It really is a good wine.

While traveling through the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, my wife and I decided on some wine tasting at various locations . No-one could have been more surprised then us, when we asked for some Red Ass (thought it was a joke) wine. This is a pleasant sweet fruity wine, and it is absolutely delicious. We were told that the flavor changes seasonally because of the availability of the fruits (makes sense), but what we drank is wonderful. We bought some for ourselves, and purchased several for gifts. The feedback from the gifts is stellar, and nearly everyone wanted to know where they can buy it. Also, I highly recommend stopping by the winery if you get the opportunity, as the owners and staff take kindness to the extreme.

A friend of mine had gone to South Dakota and I got to try some of this that she brought back. Needless to say, i haven’t been able to quit thinking about it. My husband recently got a job in South Dakota and I was so excited to move because guess what? I get Red Ass Rhubard wine now. Bought my first bottle yesterday and it was as good as I remember it. I can’t wait to move up w/ my husband and get a bottle every week!! :)

I love a good bottle of wine. I typically go for a sweet red. Red Ass Rhubarb was given to me as a gift and it is by far, my all time favorite! It didn’t leave a bitter taste in my mouth, it wasn’t dry or overly sweet/tart. It was a perfect mix of juicy tartness and sweet raspberries. Thank you for making such a wonderful wine for us!

I sampled this wine while on vacation at Prairie Berry Winery. I fell in love with the unique flavor and ordered it to be shipped home. I have been sharing it with friends and family. Everyone has really enjoyed it and wants more. This has a flavor that is not too sweet or tart. I thoroughly enjoy sitting out on the deck and sipping a glass of this.

This is an excellent wine. The name made me happy from the start. My friend brought this from South Dakota where he’d been to Sturgis on a bike run back to Kentucky to share with me. He isn’t a big drinker, so that says a great deal about your wine already. We sat in a hot tub and enjoyed this zippy, bright, delightful wine along with wonderful conversation and had a lovely evening. We will be placing an order for more soon!
