In the wine world, wine judges are the elite.They’re the ones who get to say “this is good wine” and people trust they’re right.

They don’t judge wines based on their personal preferences. They judge on the quality of the wine, which includes how closely the wine resembles the grape or fruit it’s made from, and a lot of other factors. It takes a lot of training and wine tasting to be a wine judge.

Wine quality varies, just like food quality varies. The end results all depend on the quality of the ingredients, the care that goes into the preparation and the expertise of the preparer. We work really hard to make the wine as good as we can make it. That’s why we appreciate it when the judges acknowledge that we’ve done something right. Like they’ve done more than 700 times since 2001.

It’s a winery in South Dakota. Uh huh, South Dakota. On the wine map, it might as well be Siberia. So imagine my surprise when we rolled out the wines nominated for best of show in their class and Prairie Berry is among them. Out of 796 wines entered, 39 were nominated for best of show. That’s a platinum honor at the Winemaker Challenge. That’s Prairie Berry. The wine was a 2008 Frontenac from the Lewis & Clark Vineyard, of all places. It will set you back $21.50 at full retail. And it was delicious; a clean, well balanced dessert wine deserving of its seat at the table. Didn’t win (a 2008 Inniskillin Riesling Icewine from the Niagara Peninsula, $80 per 375ml took the category) but it was certainly in the game.”

    The judges were particularly impressed with the wines made from University of Minnesota-developed, cold hardy hybrid grapes. News of high-quality wines made from previously unproven grape species is a high point for an ag-based industry that is struggling with the repercussions of climate change.Dan Berger, of the Riverside International Wine Competition commented, “It’s probably a little unusual for us to see a Frontenac even entered, but fairly common for the Riverside Wine Competition to recognize such wines. We’ve given gold medals and sweepstakes awards before to Traminette, to Diamond, to Vignole, and to at least a dozen other unusual grape varieties. But the stylish manner in which these two Frontenacs were made were really very encouraging for the judges. And in particular because the two wines were tasted by two completely different panels who had never chatted with each other. To have these two varieties do so well in our competition is wonderful news.”
